End of the Road: A letter to the Czech Republic

Dear Czech Republic,

We haven’t known each other very long but in the brief time we’ve had together I’ve grown quite fond of you. You’ve been my home for the past two years and although I’m now back in Ireland, it still feels like I’m just visiting and will be back to you shortly.

But alas that is not the case and I won’t enjoy your company for quite some time. During our time together I tried to get to know you as best as I could and explored as much of your beautiful lands as was feasible. I’d like to think I know you fairly well now and can talk fondly of you with those who haven’t had the pleasure of knowing you.

You should be most proud of your people who I can say without doubt are the friendliest, warmest and most generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. We have made friends for life in the short time we were there and look forward to seeing them again in the future.

There are so many beautiful towns we had the pleasure of visiting and alas so many more we did not get to visit. This gives us yet more reasons to return to you and finish that part of our exploration. The many wonderful towns we did see are a testament to your rich history and vibrant future and it was thoroughly enjoyable taking the train to explore the well known as well as the hidden gems.

I was most impressed by your determination to maintain your cultural heritage and it was great to attend the festivals celebrating Czech culture throughout your lands, something that is perhaps being lost somewhat in Ireland and in many other nations throughout the World. Holding on to one’s culture and customs is hugely important and I hope that you continue to do so for the sake of future generations.

I can honestly say that the last two years have been the best of my life and that the Czech Republic now occupies a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to see you again in the future. In the meantime we’re off on a new adventure to far away Tasmania, Australia which promises to be exciting and if it proves to be even a fraction as enjoyable as our time in the Czech Republic then we’ll be quite happy indeed.

All that’s left to say is farewell for now Czech Republic, it’s been a truly life-changing experience and I thank you for everything from the bottom of my heart. Till we meet again.

Your friend,

James

  1. Good luck James, and thanks for letting us locals to see our country by wondering eyes of an empathic – shall I really say visitor?, two years are more than that.

Look forward reading your Antipodean blog!
